Hotel Review : California Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong

I was not planning to create a post about the hotel where we stayed in Hong Kong but since the online site where I booked the hotel will give me points when I post my review, I decided to create one. Also, I thought this might also be helpful for others.

I am not doing this review to bash the hotel but to just share our experience.

Alrighty - I knew that hotel rooms in Hong Kong are quite small (at least for the 3 stars below) and quite expensive. I tried my best to look for a reasonable priced hotel - I did not want to book a one star and 3 stars were quite pricey already. So I've found and booked the California Hotel. It is a 2 star hotel and the price was just fine.

Hotel location : very good location! It's located at Tsim Sha Tsui - it is surrounded by malls and stores and it's the touristy area. Also, the Tsim Sha Tsui station is just a stone throw away from the hotel. I believe, if you take the D1 exit, you'll see the hotel on the right across the street. The sign is quite small but it is between the Standard Chartered Bank and a jewelry store.

Can you see that yellow wall on the middle of the picture? That's the D1 exit of Tsim Sgha Tsui MTR station

This is the entrance of the building where the hotel is.

The hotel reception is at the 4th floor. The elevator can fit in maybe up to 6 people - so that's good.

The reception area is decent. They also have a lounge that serves as the waiting area, and there's one computer - which I am not sure if the guests can use it, a microwave and I think I saw a refrigerator too, and this is also the area where you can leave your bag once you checked out but still have time to roam around.

Going to our room, I was surprised because we passed by an area that looked like a garage before we reached our room - I have photos below - it was quite shocking. Not a good sight to see on your first day.

The door on the left was the actual door of our hotel room.

The hall leading to our room - i call it - the garage

When we reached our room - I know it is going to be small, but I did not expect that it will be that tiny. The 3 sides of the bed touches the wall. The bathroom touches the other side and a very small space where you cannot even make 3 steps. Please see photos below.

Can you see how small it is? I was sitting on the bed when I took this. Door on the left, the bathroom on the right.

Can you see the corner of the bed?

When you enter, this is how it looks like. shuckers!

I hate to say this but it is true - when you use the toilet bowl - your knee touches the door and you cannot even close it properly :( that was really sad and disappointing. I should have listened to people who reviewed the hotel and they were saying the same thing.

When you take a bath everything inside the bathroom will get wet - ok, not everything but you have to shower right where you brush your teeth - so go figure.

Also when I asked the receptionist what should we take going to Disneyland, the guy said to just go to the train station and there's a lot of directions there - the only time we spoke to them again was when we checked out.

Will I book it again next time? No, but I'll book one that's on the same area.

  1. Stayed at Shama for 1 month. The room (a studio) was great but faced the Nathan Road so it was a little noisy. The location is apart from the traffic great - in the heart of TST. Nice staff and a small but ok gym. A very nice roof top terass! spain holidays
